In honour of CMV Awareness Month this June, CMV Canada has released a crucial assessment of provincial newborn congenital CMV (cCMV) screening programs. This evaluation serves as a wake-up call, revealing that Canada as a whole is failing to adequately screen for the number one infectious cause of infant disability in the country. Each province was graded on their approach to universal cCMV screening at birth, and the results are alarming, with the overall grade being a fail due to the lack of comprehensive screening measures.

The assessment underscores the urgent need for immediate action to protect the health and development of our newborns. Policymakers must recognize the importance of universal congenital CMV screening and learn from provinces that have successfully implemented robust programs. By adopting these measures nationwide, we can give every baby the best start in life, free from the preventable impacts of congenital CMV.

We encourage everyone to review the full assessment and join us in advocating for change. Together, we can make a difference.
