Our CMV Story: Henry’s ExperienceJune marks CMV Awareness Month, a critical time for us at CMV Canada to spotlight the importance of congenital CMV (Cytomegalovirus) screening. This year, we rally behind our theme: “Prioritizing Babies: Nationwide Call to Action for Congenital CMV Screening in Canada.”
Congenital CMV is the most common congenital infection, affecting 1 in 200 babies born each year. Despite its prevalence, awareness remains low, leading to many cases going undiagnosed. Early detection through newborn screening is vital. When CMV is identified promptly, we can intervene early, significantly improving outcomes for affected babies.
Screening for congenital CMV can safeguard the health of our little ones right from birth. It allows healthcare providers to monitor and manage potential complications such as hearing loss, vision impairment, and developmental delays. By prioritizing early screening, we can ensure every precious life gets the best start possible.
Our call to action is simple yet powerful: advocate for universal congenital CMV screening across Canada. By spreading awareness, we empower parents with knowledge and the tools needed to protect their children. Awareness campaigns, educational programs, and community support are essential in making this vision a reality.
Join us this June in raising awareness about congenital CMV. Share information, start conversations, and support initiatives aimed at implementing nationwide screening. Together, we can make a difference. By prioritizing babies and advocating for early screening, we are taking a crucial step toward safeguarding the health and future of our youngest Canadians. Let’s ensure every baby has the opportunity to thrive.
